The local authority is Rutland County Council www.rutland.gov.uk at Catmose in Oakham.

Oakham is the larger of the two market towns within Rutland; the other is Uppingham which is approximately 3 miles from Belton and has direct access using the 747 bus service.  Uppingham is the location of the doctors’ surgery which has its own pharmacy specifically for those patients who live in villages.  Both Oakham and Uppingham have markets the latter on a Friday and Oakham on Wednesday and Saturday.

These regular markets have excellent fruit and vegetables; fish and fish meals; ham chutneys and pickles; everyday goods; flowers; plants, fresh bread; pet and bird products and lots of other produce.

There are a number of organic box scheme companies prepared to deliver to Belton in Rutland including Woodlands Farm in Lincolnshire www.woodlandsfarm.co.uk.  Other organic produce is delivered once a week from Leicester Wholefoods www.wholefoodcoop.co.uk.

There is a taxi service within the village, Foxglove travel the number for which is 01572 717464

There are numerous good physiotherapists in both Oakham and Stamford, (the latter approximately 20 miles away).  Both towns have a number of elegant shops, hotels and restaurants.  Tesco and Co-op are in Oakham and in Stamford Waitrose can be found and a large Morrison supermarket.  Market Harborough can be found eleven miles to the south of Belton in Rutland.  This is another venue for elegant shops, hotels and restaurants.  Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl and Sainsbury can be found here.

A mile or two to the south of Market Harborough heading in the direction of East Farndon you will find Farndon Fields.  A farm shop with excellent produce and well worth visiting.

Uppingham offers excellent local shopping.  Two butchers, two ironmongers, a choice of hairdressers and barbers, an excellent bakers, gentleman’s clothing, sports and book shop, newsagents, a one stop seven eleven opposite Uppingham School and a small Co-op.  There is also a choice of excellent hotels and restaurants; a fish a chip shop, three Chinese (one restaurant and two take away) and an Indian Restaurant and a take away.

As an update on the ‘Choose Better’ campaign encouraging the public to use the right services at the right time. We have developed the following resources :

  •  NHS Choose Better Film For Parents – this short film for parents, aims to cover childhood symptoms with advice and guidance and, where necessary, symptoms which need escalation and emergency care.  The overall aim is to reassure parents and to help them to make better health care choices for their children and so avoid inappropriate use of the Emergency Department (A&E)  www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsS-HFjzdbU
  •  Choose Better ‘A guide to keeping healthy and happy in later life’  (please see attached) or you can download by clicking

As part of this campaign we have designed the above resources that can help promote the campaign in local areas.  These can be downloaded for use within your channels. We would really appreciate your help in getting this information out to your appropriate customers and staff.  This may mean including information on your intranet, internet site and also for display in public areas.
