BELTON & RIDLINGTON CRICKET CLUB (“The Foxes”)
We have staged four fixtures thus far this season, in addition to two fixtures lost due to the ‘normal summer weather’, with three defeats and a win – albeit claimed through the perplexing mathematical Duckworth-Lewis method!
The season started in a limp mode with a depleted team (or even half a team) being soundly beaten at Islip but since then, performances have greatly improved, despite being beaten home and away by Great Dalby. In the home fixture, Steve Langford and David Fairley were in the runs but our highest batting score of the season came at the picturesque Great Dalby ground last weekend where we accumulated a very decent score whilst batting first of 165 for 6 from our allotted 30 overs. All of our top order made good contributions with Josh Wedge (49), Ben Kind (32) and Steve Kind (20) leading the way. The outcome was very close, with Dalby scoring the winning runs with just 8 balls left in a finely balanced contest.
Our one claimed victory of the season thus far came at home to the Harborough Taverner’s back in early June where, after bowling the opposition out for a meagre 65, we were well on course for victory (Steve Langford 20 not out) at 37 for 3 when the heavens opened and halted proceedings.
We have two fixtures left this season, away at Uppingham Town CC on Sunday 27 August and at the inaugural Hallalton Cricket Festival on Sunday 3 September where we are one of three local teams (along with Hallaton and Tugby) all playing each other in a triangular tournament to seek local bragging rights!
The format is three 16 over a side matches with a trophy for the overall victors. There is entertainment, a bbq and bar on the go all day at the Hallaton Recreation Ground and all support welcome on what should be a great cricketing and social occasion – weather permitting of course.
