BELTON & RIDLINGTON CRICKET CLUB (“The Foxes”)
During the second half of the season, we have been blessed by far more ‘cricketing like‘ weather and our final four matches of the season in August and September saw us recording two victories with two losses and (unusually) no postponements.
In early August, we made the trip to the scenic Great Dalby ground and after restricting the home side to 145 for 6 wickets from their allotted 30 overs, we looked to be well on the way to victory until a late batting collapse saw skipper and opening bat Steve Kind literally run out of partners and stranded on 65 not out, with us just 13 runs short of victory at 132 all out.
Two weeks later we staged only our second home fixture of the season up at Ridlington against the Harborough Taverners with excellent batting contributions from Steve Kind (80), Paul Morton (26) and Fergus Holt (21) helping us to a healthy 155 for 8 from our 30 overs. Our opening bowler Dave Fairley was in inspired form and ripped the heart out of the Harborough batting by taking 5 quick wickets for just 6 runs with the visitors reeling on 15 for 6 in response! The Taverners staged a comeback of sorts but were eventually all out for just 84 earning ‘the Foxes’ a first win of the season by the wide margin of 71 runs.
Our penultimate match of the season saw us make the short trip in early September up and over the hill to Hallaton. An excellent all-round performance saw us record another comfortable victory, this time by a margin of 36 runs. After being put into bat, we made good steady progress with skipper Kind continuing his rich vein of form making 68, ably supported by Steve Langford (29) and Mick Wright (26) and we managed to set a challenging target of 194 for 5 from our 30 overs, the highest team score of the season. With some good all-round bowling and catching, we were always on top and key bowling contributions from Paul Morton (3 for 23) and James Keywood (2 for 31) helped to ensure another success.
Unfortunately, we served up our worst performance of the season for the finale against close rivals Tugby, (strengthened somewhat by the inclusion of Matt Boyce, the former Leicestershire CCC opening batsman!), losing heavily at home in front of a large and boisterous crowd in the autumnal sunshine. But for the season overall, whilst we have lost more than we have won, two of the defeats were extremely close, we established a Club record highest ever batting partnership v Uppingham in July of 151 runs and in the main, we have been competitive despite again struggling to raise a full team for many of the fixtures.
And so to the stats for the 2016 season…………….
